Nissan GT-R production set to end in 2024 after 17 years

The R35 Nissan GT-R has been around since December 2007. The Japanese carmaker has finally decided to end the production of one of the most famous modern sports cars later this year.

After 17 years, the Nissan GT-R will go out of production in October 2024. It means, 2024 will be the last model year of the GT-R in the United States.

The R35 Nissan GT-R was built to take on supercar heavyweights like Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari. It became an instant hit when it first came out. The car was known for its thumping performance and insane grip levels thanks to a trick all-wheel drive system.

The R35 was an engineering masterpiece at the time. However, it failed to keep up with its rivals in terms of development. Nissan tried to keep it relevant by introducing updates, but it wasn’t long before the car started to show its age.

This year, Nissan announced two special editions of the GT-R. The T-spec Takumi Editon ad Skyline Edition will be the last of the R35 generation. According to the company, less than 200 units will be built.

There has been talk of an R36 Nissan GT-R. More recently, Ponz Pandikuthira, Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for Nissan North America, stated that the ‘GT-R’ name will live on. “The next generation GT-R has to be an authentic GT-R,” he said.

While Nissan hasn’t finalized the powertrain for the R36 GT-R yet, it is likely to feature some form of electrification.
