Nearly 1 Million Dodge Journeys Under Probe After Fatal Accident With Trapped Driver

  • NHTSA probes 992,643 units of the Dodge Journey over multiple reports of faulty door locks and windows.
  • The case opened after a fatal accident, where the driver got trapped inside her vehicle during a fire.
  • The investigation has now been upgraded from a preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis and could lead to a recall.

NHTSA announced that 992,643 examples of the Dodge Journey produced between 2009 and 2020 are under investigation, for inoperative door locks and windows that might prevent occupants from exiting in the case of an emergency.

The agency opened the investigation last year, after a fatal accident that took place in December 2022. In this case, the driver was allegedly trapped inside her 2009 Dodge Journey, during a fire caused by an electrical system malfunction.

While NHTSA is still investigating the cause of the vehicle fire and its “potential effect on the actuation of the door locks”, more reports about vehicle entrapment cases have been discovered.

According to the official documents, 7 incidents were discovered by the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI), and 13 by the automaker, for a total of 19 cases after the elimination of duplicates. Among those there were no reported injuries, setting aside the single aforementioned fatality.

As a result, ODI upgraded the investigation from a preliminary evaluation to a more detailed engineering analysis. This was deemed necessary to “assess the risk to motor vehicle safety” so that the government agency could decide whether it would proceed to an – admittedly massive – recall.

As reported by Automotive News, Stellantis issued the following statement: “We extend our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of the customer whose life was lost, and we are providing NHTSA with our full cooperation.”

Dodge only sold a single generation of the Journey midsize crossover, offered between the 2009 and 2020 model years. The model was produced in Mexico and also exported in Europe between 2011 and 2015 as the rebadged Fiat Freemont. However, the vast majority of the 1.1 million units produced ended up in North America.
