Recently, the sales figures for the month of April have been released. As per these figures, the Mahindra Thar has outsold the Jimny 24 times. Yes, you heard that right. It has not sold double or triple, but instead 24 times. The total sales for Thar were recorded at 6,160 units.
Mahindra Thar: April Sales Analysis
As stated above, Mahindra Automotive managed to dispatch a total of 6,160 units of the Thar in April of this year. In the same month last year, the sales tally stood at 5,302 units. This translates to a yearly sales growth of 16 percent.
Meanwhile, on a month-on-month basis, Thar has recorded a humble 2 percent growth with sales for March being 6,049 units. The overall sales growth of Thar seems to be very good considering the model has been out since August 15, 2020.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny: April Sales Analysis
Coming to the sales analysis of Maruti Suzuki Jimny, the month of April was a very poor month for the SUV. Maruti Suzuki only managed to post a sales tally of 257 units in April. There is no reference for a year-on-year growth or decline as the model was launched back in June 2023.
As for the month-on-month analysis, the Jimny suffered a decline in sales of 19 percent. In the month of March, the total sales of Jimny were at 318 units. The sales of Jimny over the last few months have been declining, and the car is struggling to find buyers.
Why is Mahindra Thar outselling the Maruti Jimny?
Ever since its launch, the Jimny has been suffering from lackluster sales. On the other hand, Thar has been experiencing a surge in sales. Now you may be wondering why this is the case. Well, below are the answers to your question.
Multiple drivetrain options
One of the biggest reasons behind the success of Thar in India is that it offers both petrol and diesel engine options. The Jimny, on the other hand, comes only with a single petrol engine option.
Additionally, the Thar is offered with both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Jimny, meanwhile, only comes standard with four-wheel drive, which may not be required by everyone.
Lower base price of Thar
In the budget-conscious Indian market, every penny matters. And because of this, Thar once again outsells the Jimny. The Mahindra Thar’s 2WD variant starts at Rs 10.55 lakh. Meanwhile, the 4X4 variants start at Rs 13.87 lakh.
The Jimny, on the other hand, comes with a price tag of Rs 12.74 lakh without discounts. Also, its top-end variant costs Rs 15.05 lakh. So because of this lower base price, the Thar attracts a lot more buyers in the country.
Thar offers more power
Another one of the main reasons for Thar being the more popular of the two. It comes equipped with more powerful engines. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine generates 150 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, its base 1.5-litre turbo diesel makes 119 bhp and 300 Nm of torque.
Additionally, its 2.2-litre diesel engine makes 130 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. The Maruti Suzuki Jimny, on the other hand, comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 105 PS and 134 Nm of torque.
Hardtop and soft-top options
This may not seem like a very significant reason for the Thar’s success. However, it certainly is an added advantage of the Thar. Mahindra offers this lifestyle off-roader with the option between a hardtop as well as a soft-top. Maruti Suzuki, however, only offers the Jimny with a hardtop.

As if the Mahindra Thar was not already popular enough. The Thar will soon be offered in a 5-door version as well. Most likely, it will be named the Armada and will be launched in August of this year. The company has made the Thar more practical with the addition of two doors in the middle.
It will now become a proper five-seater SUV and will come with a ton of features. Its list of features will include ADAS, a single-pane electric sunroof, roof-mounted speakers, a metal roof, a bigger 10.25-inch instrument gauge cluster, and a ton of others.
