Is The 2024 Maruti Swift The Slowest Swift Ever? V-Box Data Out!

Maruti Suzuki launched the all-new Swift in the market last week. This premium hatchback is now available at Rs 6.49 lakh, ex-showroom. The price of the car goes up to Rs 9.64 lakh, ex-showroom. We have already seen several videos, including reviews of the new Swift, online. The Swift has always been a small hatchback that is fun to drive and fuel-efficient. However, with the new version, things have changed. One of the major differences between the previous generation and the current generation Swift is the engine. How has this affected the overall performance of this hatchback? let’s find out.

According to various reports that have surfaced online, the all-new Maruti Swift is not the best when it comes to performance. The new Swift has one less cylinder compared to the previous generations and it also generates less power and torque. The all-new Swift has a claimed 0-160 km/h acceleration time of 5.5 seconds and it does the 0-100 km/h in just 12.9 seconds.

As per the VBOX test conducted by Evo India, the all-new Swift did 0-60 km/h in 6.06 seconds and 0-100 km/h in 14.7 seconds. This is with the manual version. The AMT variant of the Swift did 0-60 km/h in 7.46 seconds and took 17.12 seconds to reach the 100 km/h mark.

This means this is the slowest Swift ever made. When you compare it with the previous generation models, the difference in performance is even more evident. The last generation Maruti Swift, which was launched in 2018, did 0-100 km/h in a claimed 11.96 seconds.

Similarly, the second-generation petrol variant of the Swift did 0-100 km/h in 12.6 seconds, which is still faster than the current generation. The first generation Maruti Swift, which was first introduced in the market back in 2005, also had a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 12.5 seconds.

What Happened?

While the current generation Swift manages to be a fun-to-drive car, the brand-new engine has affected its performance. Maruti is not the only manufacturer doing so. Almost every manufacturer in the world is being forced to make engines that are safer for the environment and emit very little pollution.

In a bid to achieve this goal and make the engines meet the emission norms put forward by the countries, manufacturers often have to compromise on performance. The Maruti Suzuki Swift we have in the market is also equipped with a 3-cylinder engine that is tuned in such a manner that it is more suitable for city use. It has enough low-end torque to move around within the city without constantly fiddling with the gear lever.

Fuel efficiency is also a factor. With the rise in fuel prices, customers are always looking for fuel-efficient cars. Maruti is one of those manufacturers known for offering fuel-efficient cars, and the new Swift is no different. They had to prioritise fuel efficiency over the performance as this a mass segment hatchback.

The manual version of the Swift has a claimed economy of 24.8 km/l and the AMT version of the hatchback has a claimed economy of 25.75 km/l. Maruti also confirmed recently that they have no plans to introduce the Swift RS and Swift Sport in the Indian market.
