Hyundai Ioniq 6 Sales Jump 188% In The U.S. But Elantra, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Tuscon, Venue Are Down

The carmaker says that demand for its eco-friendly models has jumped this year

 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Sales Jump 188% In The U.S. But Elantra, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Tuscon, Venue Are Down

  • Hyundai sold 331,892 vehicles through the first 5 months of the year, a 2% increase from the year prior.
  • Demand for the Ioniq 6 and Ioniq 5 has jumped this year.
  • The Tucson remains Hyundai’s best-selling model with 78,565 units sold.

Sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 have jumped by an impressive 188% in the first five months across the United States, yet it still trails the Ioniq 5 in terms of overall sales.

Through the first five months of this year, Hyundai sold 5,998 examples of the Ioniq 6, a huge leap from the 2,083 sold over the same period last year. In May alone, 1,099 Ioniq 6s found new homes, a 13% increase from the 971 sold in the same month in 2023. May was a particularly fruitful month for the Ioniq 5 too, with 4,449 units sold, 82% more than the 2,446 sold in May 2023. In total, 14,973 Ioniq 5s have been sold from January to May.

Hyundai sold a total of 78,485 vehicles in the U.S. in May. That’s 12% more than the 70,001 vehicles it sold in May last year. Year-to-date its sales are up 2% to 331,892.

The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 aren’t the only Hyundai models to enjoy a spike in sales this year. Sales of the Kona are up 25%, while the Palisade and Sonata are also up by 33% and 7%, respectively. Interestingly, some of the carmaker’s best-known models are down. For example, the Tucson is down 5% from 82,884 to 78,565, while sales of the Elantra have fallen 18% from 61,314 to 50,273.

The Santa Cruz is also down by 9%, while the Santa Fe, Venue, and Nexo are down 5%, 21%, and 28% respectively.

“We continue seeing great success in our eco-friendly line-up with an overall 50% increase YOY,” Hyundai Motor America chief executive Randy Parker said of the results. “Both EVs and Hybrids continue to gain popularity with Hyundai’s newest HEV, the 2024 Santa Fe gaining 116% YOY and our award-winning IONIQ 5 family increasing 82%. We’re proud to also announce Hyundai has America’s Most Awarded EV Lineup in the industry.”
