We are slowly seeing a trend where car manufacturers are slowly shifting their focus from ICE vehicles to EVs and Hybrids. In India, we currently have several cars that are offered with both mild and strong hybrid systems. Here, we have a list of strong hybrid cars that are available for sale and also the models that are expected to launch in the future. We’ll start with the models that are available for sale first.
Grand Vitara
The first car on the list is the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. This was the first-ever new product jointly developed by Suzuki with Toyota for the Indian market. It is available with both a mild hybrid and strong hybrid variant. The strong hybrid variant uses a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that works alongside an electric motor. This strong hybrid system makes the Grand Vitara extremely fuel-efficient. It returns 27.97 kmpl as per ARAI. The price for the Grand Vitara Hybrid starts at Rs 18.43 lakh, ex-showroom, and goes up to Rs 20.09 lakh, ex-showroom.
Urban Cruiser Hyryder
Toyota’s version of the Grand Vitara is called the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Both these SUVs differ in terms of exterior design, but under the hood, they remain the same. The Toyota Hyryder also returns a fuel economy certified at 27.97 kmpl. The price for the Hyryder starts at Rs 18.69 lakh, ex-showroom, and Rs 20.19 lakh, ex-showroom.
Toyota Innova Hycross
Another popular MPV in the Indian market is the Innova Hycross. The current generation of the Innova features a strong hybrid system. It is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor. The engine generates a total of 183 Bhp and 188 Nm of peak torque. It is paired with an e-CVT gearbox as standard. The price for the Innova Hycross hybrid variant starts at Rs 25.72 lakh, ex-showroom, and goes up to Rs 30.68 lakh, ex-showroom.
Maruti Invicto
Maruti’s version of the Innova Hycross is sold as the Invicto via Nexa dealerships. It is currently the flagship model in Maruti’s entire lineup. The Invicto is only available with the strong hybrid engine option. It generates the same power and torque as the Innova. The price for the Invicto starts at Rs 25.30 lakh, ex-showroom, and goes up to Rs 29.02 lakh. When compared to the Innova, it misses out on some features, including ADAS.
Honda City Hybrid
Honda was the first manufacturer to offer a strong hybrid car in the mass segment. The City Hybrid is powered by a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle engine that generates a combined power of 126 PS and 253 Nm of torque. It has a claimed fuel economy of 26.5 kmpl.
Upcoming Hybrid Cars
Other than the models mentioned above, we also have a list of cars that are expected to come with strong hybrid tech in the future.
Maruti Fronx
The Maruti Fronx is actually a beefed-up version of the Baleno. It is even called the baby Grand Vitara because of its exterior design. Maruti announced this year that the Fronx will get hybrid tech in the future. This would be different from the system that we see in the models available in our market at the moment. It will be a Series Hybrid System where the petrol engine’s sole purpose is to act as a generator to produce electricity. This electricity then powers an electric motor, which in turn drives the wheels.
Maruti Swift
In a few months’ time, the next-gen Swift will be launched in the market. There are reports that Maruti will be introducing strong hybrid tech in the new hatchback too. We are expecting this system to be the same as the one Maruti will offer in the Fronx.
Next-gen Dzire
The next-generation Dzire has also been spotted testing a couple of times, and it is expected that the next-gen Dzire would also be offered with strong hybrid technology.
Grand Vitara 7-Seater
Maruti will be launching a 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara SUV by 2025. It is expected to be slightly longer than the 5-seater variant. However, it will be offered with the same strong hybrid engine options as the 5-seater version.
Hyryder 7-seater
If Maruti launches a 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara, Toyota will also launch a 7-seater version of the Hyryder as both these SUVs are mechanically the same.
